Tesla Insurance appears set to expand into another U.S. state, with new regulatory filings showing the company is preparing to launch its in-house insurance product in Washington later this year.
According to documents submitted to state regulators, Tesla General Insurance has filed a new private passenger auto insurance program in Washington with a proposed effective date of September 1, 2026. (via Coverager)
If approved, Washington would become the 16th U.S. state where Tesla offers insurance coverage directly to customers.
Two Safety Score options
The filing also provides an early look at how Tesla plans to structure the program in Washington. Similar to several other recent launches, drivers will have access to two different versions of Tesla’s insurance scoring system — the standard Safety Score and a separate Safety Score with Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
Tesla’s Safety Score uses driving data collected from the vehicle to help determine premiums. Depending on the state, factors such as hard braking, aggressive turning, unsafe following, excessive speeding, and late-night driving can all influence rates.
The addition of a dedicated score for vehicles using FSD reflects Tesla’s continued efforts to differentiate between manually driven miles and those completed while the advanced driver assistance system is engaged.
First sign of expansion since Georgia withdrawal
The Washington filing comes after records showed Tesla had withdrawn its long-running application to launch insurance in Georgia earlier this year, marking the first known example of the company pulling back from entering a new insurance market.
Tesla originally filed to launch in Georgia in 2022 and had planned to begin offering policies later that year. However, recent updates to the state’s SERFF database show those filings have now been closed and withdrawn.
Tesla first launched its insurance business in California in 2019 before gradually expanding to additional states across the U.S. The company currently offers coverage in 15 states, with many markets utilizing Tesla’s real-time Safety Score system to personalize premiums based on actual driving behaviour.
