A newly discovered change buried within the latest Tesla mobile app code suggests the company could soon verify the identity of the driver before using Full Self-Driving (FSD).
The finding comes from a decompilation of Tesla App version 4.58.5 by Tesla App Updates on X, which revealed references to what appears to be a new identity verification process tied directly to FSD activation. While Tesla has not announced the feature publicly, the code strongly suggests the vehicle’s interior cabin camera could play a key role.
Perhaps the most intriguing discovery is the presence of strings such as fsdIdentityCheckFailedTitle and showFsdIdentityCheckFailedDialog, which suggest Tesla is developing some form of identity verification tied to FSD access.
Exactly how the system would work remains unclear, but one possibility is that the cabin camera could be used to confirm the driver’s identity before certain FSD functions become available. If that is the case, the app appears to already include the framework for notifying users when that verification process fails.
If implemented, it would represent one of the biggest changes to how Tesla manages access to its driver assistance software.
Today, any authorized driver with access to a vehicle can activate FSD, regardless of which driver profile is selected. An identity verification system would introduce an additional layer of security by ensuring the person behind the wheel matches the account or profile permitted to use the feature.
Why Would Tesla Add Identity Checks?
There are several possible reasons why Tesla may be considering such a move. The company has increasingly tied vehicle functionality to specific accounts and profiles, particularly as software subscriptions become a larger part of the ownership experience.
Identity verification could help prevent unauthorized use of FSD subscriptions, simplify fleet management, or play a role in future autonomous ride-hailing operations where driver accountability becomes more important.
Other Features
The discovery arrives alongside several other notable findings in the latest app update, although they appear less significant. The code references a new searchable video tutorial hub within the mobile app, deeper FSD usage statistics and streak tracking, streamlined FSD transfer validation during trade-ins, support for app sharing from third-party services, and a new ownership quality assurance workflow for vehicle transfers and service visits.
The update also includes support for Coastal Blue paint rendering within the app’s 3D vehicle viewer, a colour currently exclusive to European-built Model Y Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) vehicles.
As with all decompiled code, there is no guarantee these features will reach production vehicles, and Tesla frequently tests or abandons functionality before release. However, the presence of both user-facing dialogs and backend support suggests this identity verification system may already be well into development.
