First Giga Press begins to take shape at Giga Texas

Construction continues at a rapid pace at Tesla’s next Gigafactory in Austin, Texas as the automaker aims to have the first vehicles roll off the production line later this year.

That construction hasn’t been limited to the buildings at the Gigafactory. Over the weekend, the first IDRA Giga Press machine was spotted, showing significant progress has been made since the parts began arriving last month.

When complete, this 6,000 ton Giga Press machine will be making the rear underbodies for the Model Y, the first car expected to be produced at the factory.

We also learned during the company’s Q4 2020 earnings call an even bigger 8,000-ton Giga Press machine will be required to manufacture parts of the upcoming Cybertruck. The electric truck will also be manufactured in Austin, and deliveries are expected to begin later this year or early 2022.
