Tesla teases Model YL launch in the U.S. – but what about Canada?

Tesla appears to be preparing for the long-awaited arrival of the Model YL in North America, with the company dropping a hint that the extended wheelbase SUV could be coming to the United States sooner rather than later.

The teaser came in classic Tesla fashion. On Wednesday, the automaker posted a photo of an unusually long dachshund accompanied by the simple caption, “Looking forward to the long weekend.” But that wasn’t all – a closer look at the dog’s collar shows it has a tag with the Launch Series logo, the same logo Tesla used on the Model Y Launch Series.

While Tesla’s post was vague on the surface, the message was widely interpreted as a nod to the upcoming Model YL Launch Edition, the six-seat version of the Model Y that has already launched in several international markets.

A U.S. launch appears likely

The biggest takeaway from Tesla’s teaser is not necessarily that the Model YL is coming to North America, which was fully expected based on recent sightings of test vehicles, but rather that it may initially launch in the U.S. first.

Tesla’s post referenced the upcoming long weekend in the United States ahead of July 4 Independence Day celebrations, and the company stopped short of mentioning Canada or even North America directly.

That matters because Tesla’s supply chain has changed significantly over the last year. Due to ongoing tariffs, Tesla is no longer exporting U.S.-built vehicles into Canada. As a result, even if the Model YL launches south of the border first, it does not automatically mean Canadian deliveries would begin at the same time.

What about Canada?

For Canadian buyers, there may still be a path to getting the larger Model Y. Tesla now sources Model 3 for Canada from Giga Shanghai, and the company could choose a similar strategy for the Model YL, which is currently only produced in China.

This itself would be another shift in Tesla’s supply chain, as the Model Y is currently imported into Canada from the company’s factory in Germany, Giga Berlin.

Giga Texas expected to handle U.S. production

For the American market, production is expected to take place at Tesla’s Texas factory. Giga Texas already serves as the primary manufacturing hub for the Model Y in the United States, making it the obvious location to add production of the longer-wheelbase variant.

The Model YL made its debut in China last year, addressing one of the most common criticisms of the standard Model Y’s optional third row — limited space for passengers in the back. To solve that issue, Tesla increased the vehicle’s dimensions, extending the wheelbase by 150 mm (5.9 inches) and stretching the overall body length by roughly 180 mm (7 inches).

Those changes allow Tesla to offer a dedicated six-seat layout featuring individual seats in the second row and a more usable third row, rather than adapting the existing five-seat design to accommodate extra passengers.
