Tesla’s push to bring Full Self-Driving (FSD) to Europe is continuing to gain momentum, with Belgium now approving the automaker to begin supervised testing of the software on public roads.
According to Flemish Minister of Mobility Annick De Ridder, Tesla has now received approval to test FSD on at least one vehicle in Flanders as part of Europe’s broader authorization process. The company could begin testing almost immediately once insurance and licence plate requirements are finalized.
The development marks another significant step forward for Tesla’s push into Europe, coming just weeks after the Netherlands became the first EU country to provisionally approve the technology for use on public roads.
Belgium Looking to Fast-Track Tesla FSD Approval
Flemish Minister of Mobility Annick De Ridder confirmed the approval on Wednesday, saying the tests will evaluate how Tesla’s software performs under Belgian traffic conditions, infrastructure, and road rules.
“The vehicle will be tested over approximately 5,000 kilometres to evaluate any differences with the Dutch road infrastructure and traffic rules. If the results are positive, work can quickly be done on a provisional European type approval,” De Ridder said in a post on X.
Under the authorization, Tesla’s approval would apply across all of Belgium.
Belgium’s decision appears heavily influenced by the progress already made in the Netherlands, where Tesla spent more than a year testing FSD before regulators granted provisional approval last month. Belgian officials say similarities between Dutch and Belgian road systems helped accelerate the process.
“The system has already been extensively tested on Dutch roads. Due to the strong similarities between our countries in terms of infrastructure and traffic rules, we already have a useful basis,” De Ridder explained on her website.
Tesla’s European Momentum Continues to Grow
The Belgian approval adds to rapidly growing momentum for Tesla’s FSD rollout across Europe. In recent weeks, the Netherlands has actively lobbied other EU member states to accelerate approvals, while countries including Italy, Ireland, and Sweden have either begun discussions or expanded testing efforts.
Tesla has also highlighted the pace of real-world usage in Europe. After the Dutch rollout began, Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) fleet surpassed 10 million kilometres driven in under a month, giving regulators a growing dataset as they consider broader approvals.
