Tesla has officially brought its newest Supercharger technology to Europe. This week the company confirmed the installation of the first Folding Unit Superchargers in Europe, less than two months after introducing the system in North America.
While Tesla has not yet disclosed the exact location of the first European installation, photos shared by the company show the new charging units are also equipped with telescopic light poles designed for easy transport which can then extend once on-site, simplifying the installation process even further.
The deployment not only expands Tesla’s latest charging technology overseas, but also marks the beginning of the company’s 500kW Supercharger rollout in the region.
Faster and Cheaper Supercharger Installations
Tesla first unveiled its Folding Unit, or “FU,” Superchargers earlier this year as part of a broader effort to reduce construction costs and speed up network expansion.
Unlike most traditional Supercharger installations that require significant on-site assembly, the new units arrive largely pre-built. Each Folding Unit combines a V4 power cabinet with eight charging stalls in a modular package that can be transported and deployed with minimal site work, doubling the number of stalls in its previous Prefabricated Supercharger Units (PSUs).
According to Tesla’s charging team, this new folding design reduces deployment costs by more than 20% while cutting installation timelines roughly in half. The system also improves logistics efficiency by allowing more charging stalls to be shipped per truckload compared to previous generations.
Tesla executive Max de Zegher recently explained that much of the savings come from reducing civil engineering work, electrical installation complexity, and transportation costs. The company’s goal is to standardize and simplify Supercharger construction as charging demand continues to grow worldwide.
Beginning of Tesla’s 500kW Era in Europe
The European rollout is significant for another reason: it introduces Tesla’s newest V4 charging hardware capable of delivering up to 500kW of power.
Each Folding Unit contains a 1.2 megawatt (MW) power electronics cabinet supporting eight charging stalls. The new hardware is also designed to work with battery systems operating at up to 1,000 volts, opening the door for significantly faster charging speeds for future EVs and commercial vehicles.
While today’s Tesla passenger vehicles cannot fully utilize 500kW charging, the higher-capacity infrastructure helps future-proof the network and supports upcoming vehicles with higher-voltage architectures. The V4 platform is also plays an important role in supporting the Tesla Semi up to 1.2 megawatts (MW).
