A single line in Tesla’s 10-Q filing has AI insiders scrambling to figure out which AI company Tesla bought in April.
Per the filing, Tesla entered into an agreement with the mysterious company to buy the firm for up to two billion in stock and equity awards. However, the disclosure line does not identify the company or provide any meaningful details to identify a potential company.
The line reads:
In April 2026, the Company entered into an agreement to acquire an AI hardware company for up to $2.00 billion in Tesla common stock and equity awards, of which approximately $1.8 billion is subject to certain service conditions and/or performance milestones dependent on the successful deployment of the company’s technology.
Tesla has not responded to media requests regarding the purchase, but the disclosure confirms that Tesla continues to ramp up its investments in AI infrastructure.
This year, the company is forecasting spending $25 billion in capital expenditures, and much of that investment is tied to its AI push. From self-driving software to Optimus and even robotaxis, Tesla is heavily invested in the space.
If you may be thinking this has been reported before, you may be confusing SpaceX’s announcement of a possible purchase of Cursor for $60 billion, but that deal is contingent on the company reaching certain milestones.
Whether this is a new startup, an established player, or even a niche technology needed to deploy a Tesla product, only time will tell.
