Tesla appears closer than ever to launching its long-awaited virtual Supercharger queue system. The feature has resurfaced in the mobile app just days after the company revealed a new artificial intelligence (AI) model designed to improve wait time predictions.
More than a year ago, early code discoveries suggested Tesla was developing a way to manage congestion at busy Supercharger locations. At the time, those features remained hidden and inactive. Now, with app version 4.56.0, the same functionality looks far more complete, and that Tesla may finally roll it out publicly.
How the Virtual Queue Will Work
The concept is straightforward, but execution remains complex. Instead of lining up physically, drivers will join a digital queue through the mobile app.
Code strings uncovered by Tesla App Updates on X show the system relies on geofencing. Drivers must arrive at a Supercharger before joining the queue. This approach prevents users from reserving spots remotely and keeps the process fair for those already on-site.
Once in line, drivers should see real-time updates showing their position. The app will also send notifications when a stall becomes available. In some cases, users may need to confirm or decline their turn, which should help keep vehicles moving efficiently.
Built for Seamless Background Operation
Tesla appears to be designing the system to run quietly in the background. Updates to location permissions suggest the app will detect when a driver arrives at a busy station and prompt them to join the queue.
The app may also store Supercharger data locally on the device. This would allow the system to function even in areas with weak cellular coverage, improving reliability.
Support for Non-Tesla Vehicles
One major question has been how Tesla will handle non-Tesla vehicles. Based on the latest findings, those drivers will also be included.
The system appears to support vehicles using adapters. It may also provide warnings for stations that are incompatible, helping drivers avoid issues before they plug in.
AI-Powered Predictions Play a Key Role
The timing of these updates likely isn’t a coincidence. Tesla recently outlined improvements to its Supercharger wait time predictions using a more advanced AI model.
