SpaceX partners with Cursor to build next-gen coding AI, eyes $60B acquisition

SpaceX is making another major move into artificial intelligence (AI). After merging with xAI earlier this year, the company has announced a new partnership with coding platform Cursor that could pave the way for a massive acquisition later this year.

In a statement shared on X, SpaceX confirmed the two companies are collaborating on a next-generation system focused on software development and knowledge work. The goal is to compete directly with leading AI models used by developers today.

“SpaceXAI and @cursor_ai are now working closely together to create the world’s best coding and knowledge work AI,” the company said.

The partnership combines Cursor’s fast-growing developer platform with SpaceX’s massive compute infrastructure, including its Colossus supercomputer. According to the company, that system delivers the equivalent performance of roughly one million Nvidia H100 chips, putting it among the most powerful AI training clusters in the world.

“The combination of Cursor’s leading product and distribution to expert software engineers with SpaceX’s million H100 equivalent Colossus training supercomputer will allow us to build the world’s most useful models.”

What makes the deal particularly unusual is its structure. Rather than a straightforward acquisition, SpaceX has secured an option that gives it two distinct paths later this year. It can either acquire Cursor outright for US$60 billion or pay US$10 billion tied to the work completed through the partnership. “Cursor has also given SpaceX the right to acquire Cursor later this year for $60 billion or pay $10 billion for our work together,” SpaceX said in its statement.

The timing of the partnership comes ahead of SpaceX’s initial public offering (IPO) expected in June, which could value the company at nearly $2 trillion. Cursor’s valuation has already surged in recent years, climbing from just a few billion dollars to tens of billions, making the potential $60 billion price tag aggressive but not entirely out of step with market trends.
