SpaceX has unveiled its latest Starlink router, bringing Wi-Fi 7 to the satellite internet service for the first time, along with faster speeds, greater coverage and improved performance in busy wireless environments.
Called Router 4, the new hardware is a significant upgrade over Starlink’s existing router and is designed to better handle everything from everyday browsing to gaming and high-bandwidth streaming.
According to Starlink, Router 4 can cover up to 3,500 square feet (325 square metres) and support as many as 510 connected devices. The company hasn’t provided specific peak speed figures, but says the new router will deliver faster peak speeds and quicker connections to compatible devices.
“Router 4 is the first Starlink router with a Wi-Fi 7 chipset, built for streaming, gaming, and everyday use,” Starlink said.
The new router uses tri-band radios, which should also improve performance when multiple Starlink routers are being used as part of a mesh network. Other wireless features include MU-MIMO and OFDMA, along with WPA2 and WPA3 security.
SpaceX has also kept physical Ethernet connectivity. Router 4 includes two Ethernet ports, allowing owners to connect wired devices or third-party networking hardware without needing a separate adapter. Users simply remove the water-resistant port cover and connect an Ethernet cable to one of the LAN ports.
Despite the upgraded hardware, Router 4 remains compact. It measures 1.8 inches by 8 inches by 4.5 inches (46 x 203 x 115 mm) and weighs just 0.9 lbs (0.4 kg). It also carries an IP56 water-resistance rating, although Starlink says it is configured for indoor use. Its operating range stretches from -30°C to 50°C (-22°F to 122°F).
SpaceX hasn’t announced pricing or an exact release date for Router 4. Starlink says the new hardware will be “available soon in select areas.”
