Canada’s latest round of counter-tariffs against the United States has officially taken effect, adding duties of up to 50% on C$27.6 billion worth of American goods as trade negotiations between the two countries remain stalled.
The new measures came into force at 12:01 a.m. on September 8 and impose tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% across a wide range of U.S. products, including steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. The rates are designed to match tariffs recently imposed by Washington on Canadian goods.
The latest package does not, however, replace Canada’s existing counter-tariffs on American-made vehicles. The Department of Finance specifically confirmed, “Other existing counter-tariffs, including against U.S. autos, will also continue to apply.”
For Tesla buyers in Canada, there is no impact as the company is currently importing Shanghai-built Model 3s under Canada’s new Chinese EV quota. Those vehicles are subject to the regular 6.1% most-favoured-nation tariff rather than the new 15%, 25% or 50% counter-tariffs targeting U.S. goods.
Any imports of U.S.-built Teslas, which as of right now is only the Cybertruck built at Giga Texas after the Model S/X were discontinued earlier this summer, would continue to face Canada’s existing automotive counter-tariff regime.
The September 8 measures therefore create no new Tesla-specific tariff, and Tesla has not announced any Canadian price changes related to the latest package taking effect.
