Starlink is once again demonstrating how satellite internet can play a critical role beyond consumer connectivity, this time helping health officials respond to an Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The satellite internet provider announced on Friday that it has supplied 150 Starlink kits to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) to support ongoing outbreak response efforts in Ituri Province, a region where reliable communications infrastructure can be difficult to access.
According to Starlink, the deployment will provide frontline health workers with dependable internet access in areas where traditional connectivity options are often limited or unavailable.
Improving Communications for Frontline Health Workers
Africa CDC says the equipment is already helping improve coordination among medical teams working on the ground.
“Reliable connectivity is helping power the Ebola response in eastern DRC,” Africa CDC said in a statement shared on social media.
The organization added that the 150 Starlink kits are supporting ongoing response efforts by improving communications between health workers, response teams, and decision makers.
“By strengthening communication in hard-to-reach areas, these kits are helping frontline health workers and response teams detect cases faster, coordinate more effectively and protect communities from further spread of the virus.”
Why Connectivity Matters During Disease Outbreaks
Access to reliable internet has become an increasingly important tool during disease outbreaks. Health agencies rely on connectivity for everything from case reporting and contact tracing to sharing laboratory results and coordinating logistics between local and international response teams.
In remote regions, those tasks can be significantly more challenging due to limited telecommunications infrastructure. Satellite-based internet services like Starlink can be deployed quickly and operate independently of traditional terrestrial networks, making them particularly useful during emergencies.
Part of a Growing Humanitarian Role
This is not the first time Starlink has been used to support humanitarian and disaster response efforts. The service has previously provided connectivity following natural disasters, during conflict situations, and in remote communities lacking access to conventional broadband infrastructure.
