Tesla is giving Powerwall 2 owners a new way to add battery storage. The company says they can now expand their systems with a Powerwall 3 in North America and Australia, following a software update that allows the two generations to operate together.
The change is useful for households that already have a working Powerwall 2 installation but want more capacity. Adding storage can help a home use more of its own solar power after sunset and provide backup for longer during an outage.
Previously, owners looking to expand a Powerwall 2 system could not simply add Tesla’s newer battery.
Tesla’s support page says owners can link up to four Powerwall 2 units, one Powerwall 3 and three Powerwall 3 Expansion units.
Fully built out, the supported configuration would provide up to 108 kWh of storage.

Powerwall 3 first went on sale in the U.S. in February 2024, followed by Canada that May. Tesla also recently began rolling out Cybertruck Powershare integration earlier this month after years of delays.
With the required Wall Connector, a Cybertruck and Powerwall 3 can work together to back up a home during an outage. The feature is currently only available for Powerwall 3 systems, but Tesla says support for Powerwall 2 systems is coming soon.
