Lucid buys commercial spot during Saturday Night Live to go head to head with Tesla CEO Elon Musk

Lucid Motors has had Tesla in their sights from day one, hoping to deliver a car that outperforms the longtime market leading Tesla Model S. Not to let an opportunity pass them by, the electric startup has purchased airtime during tonight’s episode of Saturday Night Live (SNL) hosted by Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

Taking a page out of Musk’s playbook, Lucid announced the commercial on Twitter on Friday. The automaker didn’t reveal much about the spot, only sharing a still showing the front of the Lucid Air sedan that we presume comes from the commercial itself.

They did leave a hint with the hashtag #Firstto500. In a statement to Drive Tesla, Lucid confirmed the ad will focus on the Air’s targeted 517 mile (832km) range, and “answer the question of who will be first to 500.”

Saturday Night Live will start at 11:30pm EST (8:30pm PST) on NBC. With Musk hosting the show, it won’t be surprising if tonight’s episode gets some of the highest ratings. We may even get to see the Cybertruck, which Musk brought to New York City and is currently on display at the Tesla store in the Meatpacking District this weekend.
