Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly is heading to China and Japan this week to discuss investment in the Canadian auto sector.
As part of the trip, Minister Joly confirmed that she is meeting with BYD, Chery, Geely and Shanghai Launch Automotive Technology during her four-day trip to China. The discussions will focus on the potential for contract manufacturing and investments in Canada by these automakers.
Per Minister Joly,
What is important is how can we make sure that we offer great vehicles to Canadians that are actually affordable, and with the latest technology, while keeping and protecting our 500,000 auto workers. My job is to square that circle, and the Prime Minister has given me the mandate to really be able to work with the sector and work with the Chinese automakers.
With continued pressure from the Trump Administration on Canadian auto manufacturing, a move to consider other foreign investment could be prudent. This is especially true when you consider that Canadian manufacturing is among the best in the world, and facilities and production lines are already in place.
To support this potential foreign investment, specifically from Chinese companies, the government has already set conditions that need to be met. These conditions are:
- Investment must be a joint venture.
- Joint ventures must be majority Canadian-owned and adhere to Canadian labour law.
- Vehicles must use Canadian parts
- The vehicle and the software it uses must be secure and safeguard users’ data.
In addition to her trip to China, Joly will stop in Japan to meet with Honda and Toyota, which together account for 77% of Canada’s auto assembly facilities. These meetings are not only important, but could be the start of something significant for the automotive manufacturing industry in Southern Ontario.
