Hyundai’s electric vehicle (EV) lineup delivered a mixed but largely positive performance in Canada last month, with several models posting impressive gains as the automaker achieved its best May sales result ever.
According to Hyundai Canada, the company sold 15,134 vehicles in May, setting a new monthly sales record. While much of that success came from popular gas-powered models like the Tucson and Elantra, Hyundai’s growing EV portfolio also played a notable role in the company’s performance.
With 1,329 deliveries, Hyundai’s EV lineup represented nearly 9% of the automaker’s total sales in Canada during May.
IONIQ 5 Posts Strong Monthly Growth
Leading the charge was the IONIQ 5. The electric crossover recorded 444 deliveries in May, a 73% increase compared to the same month last year. Despite the May rebound, year-to-date sales of the IONIQ 5 remain lower than 2025 levels, with 1,213 units delivered through the first five months of the year.
Kona Electric Continues to Gain Momentum
The Kona Electric also continued to gain traction among Canadian buyers. Hyundai delivered 663 Kona EVs in May, representing a 20% year-over-year increase. More importantly, year-to-date sales have surged 72%, climbing from 1,418 units in 2025 to 2,433 units so far in 2026.
IONIQ 9 Finds Early Success
Meanwhile, Hyundai’s newest electric offering, the three-row IONIQ 9, is beginning to establish itself in the market. The automaker reported 186 deliveries in May, bringing total year-to-date sales to 709 units. While there is no historical data available for comparison since the vehicle only recently launched earlier this year, the early numbers suggest Canadian buyers are showing interest in larger three-row electric SUVs.
IONIQ 6 Faces Headwinds
Not every EV in Hyundai’s lineup experienced growth. Sales of the IONIQ 6 sedan declined significantly in May, with just 36 units delivered compared to 96 during the same month last year. However, the model remains ahead of last year’s pace overall, with year-to-date sales up 27%.
As competition in Canada’s EV market intensifies, Hyundai now finds itself in a stronger position than many legacy automakers thanks to a growing range of compelling EVs spanning multiple price points and vehicle segments.
