Hyundai Canada is seeing a noticeable surge in electric vehicle (EV) demand, with several of its models posting significant gains in March.
Leading the charge was the Kona Electric, which delivered a solid performance with 589 units sold in March, a huge 343% increase compared to the same month last year. That momentum isn’t just a one-month spike—year-to-date sales have more than doubled, climbing 103% to 1,013 units.
The sharp rise suggests Hyundai’s more affordable EV offering is a popular choice among Canadian buyers, especially as federal incentives return and fuel prices remain volatile.

Hyundai’s dedicated IONIQ lineup also posted impressive gains. The IONIQ 6, the company’s all-electric sedan, saw one of the biggest jumps, with March sales rising 242% year-over-year to 178 units. While overall volume remains relatively modest, the strong growth rate points to increasing awareness and adoption of Hyundai’s newer EV offerings.

Meanwhile, the larger IONIQ 9 is beginning to make its presence felt. With 139 units sold in March and 336 units year-to-date, the three-row electric SUV is carving out a foothold in a segment that is still largely underserved in Canada. As more families look to transition to electric without sacrificing space and practicality, models like the IONIQ 9 could play a key role in Hyundai’s long-term EV strategy.

However, not all models saw gains. The IONIQ 5, Hyundai’s flagship electric crossover and one of its most recognizable EVs, experienced a decline in March, with sales dropping 59% year-over-year to 287 units. Year-to-date figures tell a similar story, down 78% compared to 2025.
While this may raise questions about consumer demand, it could also reflect potential supply or inventory constraints.
Hyundai’s leadership has already pointed to rising fuel costs and the return of federal incentives as key drivers behind this growing interest, and March’s results appear to support that claim.
