Hyundai Delays Atria AI Self-Driving Rollout Until 2029

Hyundai is “deliberately delaying ” the rollout of its homegrown autonomous driving software, Atria AI, until 2029 to focus on data collection and machine learning.

The slower rollout timeline will allow the system to reach the internal target of being a true Level 2++ system without the issues that have plagued competitors.

The Atria AI is built on a data flywheel concept where the more data accumulates through road tests, the sharper the AI becomes. Hyundai is using 40 vehicles to collect the data, and engineers are using two systems in parallel to train the AI.

The Hard Example Mining systems will automatically flag driving situations that the model struggles with, while the Special Event Recorder will log data when the car abruptly accelerates, brakes, or the system disengages autonomous braking mode.

In terms of a rollout plan, Kwon Jung-Hyun, lead of the 42dot autonomous driving division, had this to say:

Through 2027, we’ll focus on bringing driving, parking and active-safety features to a high level of polish at the product level. 2028 will be devoted to gathering vast amounts of edge-case data to build a genuinely safe product. And 2029 is when we’ll prepare for safety certification, not just in Korea but in North America and Europe as well.

So, 2029 is the target for Atria, and the company has also confirmed it plans to release a second-half lineup of Hyundai cars equipped with the new self-driving tech but has not confirmed what models are included in this release.
