Canada’s zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) market share remained virtually unchanged in the second quarter of 2026, even as overall new vehicle registrations surged nearly 40% from the first three months of the year.

According to data from Statistics Canada released this week, Canadians registered 547,673 new vehicles between April and June, up 37.7% from 397,601 in Q1 and 1.1% year-over-year. It was also the highest quarterly total since Q2 2019. ZEVs accounted for 58,811 registrations, giving them a 10.7% market share, compared with 10.8% in Q1.

Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) continued to make up most ZEV registrations, with 40,585 units representing 7.4% of the overall market, down slightly from 7.5% in Q1. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) added 18,226 registrations, holding steady at 3.3%.

Despite the flat quarter-over-quarter share, ZEV adoption remains well ahead of last year. ZEV registrations increased 26.7% from Q2 2025, when their market share stood at 8.6%. BEV registrations jumped 37.4% year-over-year, while PHEVs increased 8.0%.

The latest figures build on the strong EV sales rebound recorded in March. That followed the February launch of Canada’s new EV Affordability Program (EVAP), after federal EV incentives had ended earlier in 2025.

Provincially, British Columbia remained Canada’s leader with an 18.7% ZEV share, down slightly from 19.0% in Q1. Quebec edged higher from 17.6% to 17.8%. Ontario remained unchanged at 8.2%, recording 17,142 ZEVs out of 208,445 total new vehicle registrations.

The results mark the third consecutive quarter in which ZEVs — which Statistics Canada defines as BEVs and PHEVs — accounted for more than one in 10 new vehicle registrations nationwide.

For comparison, Canada’s ZEV market had fallen sharply during 2025, even as hybrids gained ground.
