The Manitoba Government is looking to get Tesla’s case over the province’s EV rebate program thrown out before the case begins.
According to reporting by the Winnipeg Free Press, the Government and Manitoba Public Insurance are seeking to have the court dismiss the case ahead of hearings scheduled in the coming months.
The Government cited concerns over the court’s jurisdiction and power to review public policy matters. Manitoba considers the decision to exclude Tesla from the provincial EV rebate program a matter of policy, rather than legislation. The Government also cited Tesla’s failure to file its challenge in a timely manner.
The challenge comes as Tesla was left out of the Manitoba EV rebate program, which offers $4,000 off an EV priced below $70,000. The EV rebate program is administered by Manitoba Public Insurance.
The move to blacklist Tesla was part of a broader Canadian pushback against US-based companies with direct ties to the Trump Administration. Tesla specifically faced protests at its showrooms in 2025 and had its eligibility limited in other provincial subsidy programs in British Columbia. Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
Notably, Tesla was not barred from the national EV subsidy program when relaunched by the Carney Government.
The court has not ruled on the filing, nor have the Government of Manitoba, Manitoba Public Insurance, or Tesla issued a statement regarding the reports.
