BYD has set an October 13 launch date for its new Great Han electric sedan, a massive new flagship that will offer more than 1,000 km (621 miles) of driving range on China’s CLTC testing cycle.
Also known as the Da Han in China, the new model will sit above the existing Han in BYD’s Dynasty lineup. Pre-sales opened at the Chengdu Auto Show in August, with three configurations priced between 249,900 and 299,900 yuan (about C$50,700 to C$60,900).
The two rear-wheel-drive versions pair a 370 kW motor with a 102.326 kWh battery, delivering a claimed CLTC range of 1,008 km. An all-wheel-drive model adds a 200 kW front motor for a combined 570 kW of output, while range falls to 880 km.
All three use BYD’s latest Blade Battery and Flash Charging technology. One report says the system can take the battery from 10% to 70% in five minutes when connected to charging equipment capable of delivering up to 1,500 kW.
The Great Han is also big. At 5,256 mm long with a 3,130 mm wheelbase, it stretches beyond both the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air. Standard equipment includes dual-chamber air suspension, rear-wheel steering, zero-gravity front seats and BYD’s LiDAR-equipped God’s Eye B driver-assistance system.
There is no indication yet that the Great Han will be sold in Canada, but BYD is expanding into Canada soon, according to their website.
Also earlier this year, an automotive industry consultant said BYD was looking at establishing as many as 20 Canadian dealerships, beginning in the Toronto area before expanding to Vancouver, Montreal and Calgary. BYD did not confirm those plans.
The expansion into Canada follows the federal government’s decision to lower tariffs on a quota of Chinese-built EVs to 6.1%. The initial annual quota is 49,000 vehicles and is scheduled to gradually increase to about 70,000 by 2030.
If BYD does enter Canada, the Great Han provides another look at the type of higher-end EV the automaker could eventually bring to the market.
