Amazon announces official testing of Rivian electric delivery van

Amazon announced in a blog post Tuesday it has officially started testing its new Rivian electric delivery van in Los Angeles.

In December Drive Tesla shared the first video of one of the vans delivering packages in a L.A. neighbourhood. Now Amazon is announcing the official testing of the electric delivery vans in the area.

“Amazon customer deliveries will look a little different in parts of Los Angeles. Just one year after announcing the purchase of 100,000 custom electric delivery vehicles as part of The Climate Pledge, Amazon has begun testing the new vans on delivery routes.”

The company plans to expand their testing this year to include up to 15 additional cities. Amazon also revealed the Rivian vans come with a range of 150 miles (241km).

As part of its Climate Pledge to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, Amazon will convert their entire delivery fleet to 100% renewable energy by 2030.

To help get them there, the company announced in September 2019 plans to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans from Rivian by 2024, saying the first would hit the road in 2021.
