Tesla files application to expand the Fremont factory

Tesla has applied to expand its vehicle production facility by 64,000 square feet to the City of Fremont. The application notes that the expansion would make the current Model Y production line at General Assembly (GA) 4.5 permanent.

The ‘tent’, otherwise known as GA 4.5, has been in operation since February 2020. The spring structure is home to Model Y production and possibly some Model 3 production since its raising. The GA 4.5 was expanded in April 2020, and this new application would make this expansion and original tent permanent.

The application notes that Tesla would add a foundational structure and underground plumbing and electrical work to GA 4.5. It is unclear if GA 4.5 will produce other vehicles, but Tesla certainly needs the extra room.

Fremont currently handles global Model S and Model X orders and a significant share of Model 3 orders. Giga Shanghai covers Model 3 orders for Asia and other global markets, including Europe.

Tesla has yet to officially announce any changes to GA 4.5 or the Fremont factory. Nor has Tesla yet to announce changes to the production line at GA 4.5 or the Fremont Factory.
