Tesla wins Germany’s Midsize Car of the Year

The big Tesla news yesterday was that while visiting Germany, Tesla CEO Elon Musk revealed the official location of Gigafactory 4 (Europe) will be in Berlin near the city’s airport. But another important aspect of the announcement was when he made it, on stage at at the Golden Steering Wheel Awards.

The fact that an American-made car, and an electric one at that, won the award for best midsize car of the year in Germany is a big milestone for Tesla. Even the jury, which compared all three vehicles, called it the “biggest surprise”. In collecting points in the competition, the Model 3 beat out the second place BMW by 85 points, and the third place Audi A4 by 101 points.

Competing against perennial hometown favourites, the Audi A4 and BMW 3 series, the American-made Tesla Model 3 came out on top thanks to it’s speed, quick acceleration and agility (now even better with the latest software update), some of the best safety features and equipment, and the Tesla’s low cost of maintenance and ownership. It was also noted the Model 3 had an impact because of its cool factor, but unfortunately didn’t earn any points for that.
