New discount for Tesla insurance in BC

If you’re from Beautiful British Columbia, there’s finally some good news when it comes to car insurance. Along with a host of other changes that were implemented as of September 1, 2019, ICBC now offers a 10% discount on car insurance for vehicles with autonomous emergency braking (AEB), which the Tesla comes equipped with (obviously, as they are the safest cars ever tested).

According to their website:

Safety technology discount for autonomous emergency braking (AEB)
Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) is a safety feature that uses technology to anticipate when a vehicle is about to have a front-end collision and automatically engages the brakes without the driver’s action. Vehicles equipped with factory-installed autonomous emergency braking (AEB) will be eligible for a 10% discount as AEB has been statistically shown to help prevent crashes.

If you’re not sure whether your vehicle has AEB, check with your dealership or look in your ownership manual.

The advanced safety technology discount will apply to your Basic and some Optional coverages, as well as fleet and commercial non-fleet polices that meet the eligibility requirements.

Unfortunately, if you’re already set up with insurance on your Tesla, you will have to wait until your renewal to add this discount. You could cancel your plates and get new ones, but you would have to pay several fees to do this adding up to around $100, defeating the purpose of adding the discount.

If you just purchased your Tesla and are setting up your insurance, be sure to let your insurance agent know that Tesla’s have AEB and to apply this discount!
