Tesla’s newest Megapack 3 system is heading to one of Europe’s most significant battery energy storage projects, with SPIE Belgium installing 180 units at a large battery park in Ruien, Kluisbergen.
The project, developed by Storm, will be built on the site of a former power plant and is expected to become one of the largest battery parks currently under construction in Belgium.
Work has already started, with SPIE scheduled to begin installation and grid connection work in November 2026. Testing and commissioning are expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
According to SPIE, the battery park will store excess renewable energy when production is high and send it back to the grid during periods of peak demand.
SPIE says the project will have a storage capacity of several hundred megawatt-hours (MWh)and a total project value of more than €100 million (C$161 million/US$116 million). Based on Tesla’s current Megapack pricing, the 180 units alone could be worth in the neighbourhood of US$169 million before taxes and installation, although large commercial contracts such as these are typically negotiated separately with a storage capacity of nearly 700 MWh.
“This is a typical example of a project where several technical disciplines come together: from heavy cable infrastructure to high-voltage connections. We are responsible for the complete integration of the battery containers up to the grid, including the construction of the high-voltage substation,” says Jochen Dewaele, Project Manager at SPIE Belgium. “The scale of the project and the complexity of the grid connection make this a particularly challenging undertaking. At the same time, it perfectly demonstrates how our expertise contributes to the energy transition.”
The project is also notable because it will be one of the first large-scale deployments of Tesla Megapack 3 in Europe.
