Tesla partners with gas station to more than triple Supercharger network in Iceland

Tesla’s Supercharger network in Iceland is about to get a big boost, more than tripling in size, and it is happening with an unlikely partner.

According to a post from the official Tesla Europe & Middle East account on X (formerly Twitter), the automaker has partnered with N1, a gas station operator, to add 20 new Supercharger sites across the country, adding to the existing 9 stations already in operation.

The new stations will be added “over the next few years,” Tesla says, bringing the total number of Supercharger posts across those 29 stations to more than 200.

Those new Superchargers will be a welcomed addition in Iceland, which has embraced the Texas-based automaker with open arms. In 2023 the Model Y broke a 35-year old sales record, selling 1,316 Model Ys in the first half of the year. That was enough to make it the best-selling car (not just EV) in the country ever for a full year, even though it happened in the first six months of 2023, breaking the previous record of over 1,200 Toyota Corolla’s that were sold in all of 1988.

That trend didn’t slow down into the second half of the year, as the Model Y saw its 2023 sales increasing more than 217% compared to the previous year to 3,250 units. Tesla’s total sales in 2023 increased more than 181%, giving Tesla a market share of 20.2%, according to data from the Icelandic Transport Authority.

The expansion of the Supercharger network will also help ease congestion as all 9 of the existing Supercharger stations are open to all EVs in Iceland.
