Giga Berlin production ramp hits 4,000 Model Ys in one week

Tesla has announced that Giga Berlin produced a record 4,000 Model Ys in 7 days, reaching the new milestone just a few weeks shy of the one year anniversary of the factory’s opening.

As they have become known to do, Tesla’s Europe Twitter account shared the news with a photo of the 4,000th Model Y on the factory floor surrounded by the employees that have helped ramp the factory’s production to new highs, which when extrapolated out to a full year equates to around 200,000 new cars rolling off the production line annually, assuming some down time for maintenance and repairs.

This is the first production update from Tesla on Giga Berlin in a little over two months, and based on previous updates the rate of production is increasing quicker than ever before. On December 18 the factory reached 3,000 Model Ys in a single week, which came three months after crews reached a milestone of 2,000 Model Ys in a single week.

Part of the reason the factory has been able to increase its output is thanks to the addition of a third shift, which provides for 24 hours of production. The third shift was added last month and is already paying dividends, although Tesla still hasn’t reached their goal of 5,000 Model Ys per week from Giga Berlin, a target they were originally hoping to meet before the end of 2022.

It has also been a little over two months since the last production update from Tesla’s other new factory, Giga Texas, which opened about month after Giga Berlin did in 2022. In mid-December crews in Austin celebrated building 3,000 Model Ys in a single week. It will be interesting to see when the next update for Giga Texas arrives to compare how the factories are simultaneously ramping production. That update may come on Investor Day, which is scheduled to take place this Wednesday at Giga Texas.
