Hyundai electric car sales up 105% in year-over-year sales in March

Hyundai released its March numbers, and although global sales are 17 per cent less than in 2021, EV sales are up 105 per cent.

The March numbers are least to say interesting for the Korean automaker.

However, we should note that Hyundai does their numbers differently from other manufacturers. Their numbers include its South Korean sales numbers and wholesale numbers outside Korea.

  • Battery electric vehicles- 11,447 sold – a 105 per cent increase from March 2021.
  • Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles- 3,246 – a 12 per cent decrease since last March.
  • Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles- 445- down 61 per cent from last March.

These new March numbers represent a trend that we have seen with multiple manufactures. Battery electric vehicle sales are increasing, while plug-in hybrids are going down.

For vehicle sales, this is how it all broke down.

  • Ioniq 5 – 7,685 (20,002 YTD)
  • Kona Electric – 3,213 (9,861 YTD)
  • Tucson PHEV – 2,260 (7,529 YTD)
  • Santa Fe PHEV – 522 (2,112 YTD)
  • ONIQ Electric – 544 (1,691 YTD)
  • IONIQ Plug-In – 464 (1,348 YTD)
  • Plug-ins in China (various models) – 3 (24 YTD)
  • Plug-ins in India (Kona Electric) – 2 (52 YTD)

In addition, the Ioniq 5 also sold 2,871 vehicles in Europe and 2,700 cars in the United States. The release did not include how many were sold in Canada.

At least to say, the Ioniq 5 numbers are a disappointment. However, as per local Hyundai dealers, the demand is there, but the cars are not. I talked to a local Ontario dealer yesterday, and they are estimating that if I ordered an Ioniq 5 today, I should expect to see the car in 16-24 months.
