Tesla will start production at Giga Berlin in December. According to a report by the German publication Automobilwoche, the company will start with 1,000 Tesla Model Y’s per week and then start ramping up production gradually.
The Giga Berlin factory will be able to produce over 10,000 vehicles per week at peak.
Initially, Tesla wanted to start production back in July, but the company lacked the necessary approvals to open up. The automaker is still seeking final approvals, after a public consultation process had to be repeated.
According to Automobilwoche (via Bloomberg) Tesla is already starting to produce pre-production vehicles. Five Tesla Model Y units have already been built, but these vehicles were not on the production line.
It has been a big news week for Tesla in the region, as earlier this week Tesla backed out of state funding for their battery factory near Berlin. The company is still planning to build the battery factory, but it will be without IPCEI funding from the European Union (EU).
According to the approved EU plan for battery production, Tesla would have received around 1.13 billion euros.
