Ford has announced plans to unveil next week an all-electric version of their best-selling F-series line of pickup trucks, called the F-150 Lightning.
The automaker first announced the electric F-150 at the Detroit Auto Show in 2019. They released a video showing a prototype version of the truck towing a claimed 1.25 million pounds. No firm delivery dates were announced at the time, only saying that it would arrive “as soon as a year” after the release of the Mach-E.
That was delayed somewhat by Ford COO Jim Farley, who said in June 2020 that it wouldn’t go on sale until “mid-2022.”
It looks like that target might still be in sight as Ford will reveal it during a livestream event on May 19th at 9:30am EST (6:30am PST).
Along with the livestream video on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter, the automaker is also planning “18 impactful out-of-home locations such as Times Square in New York City and Las Vegas Boulevard.”
Details are slim at this point, with just a short promotional video and teaser image of the badging released this morning.
Farley did give some hints as to the features of the truck, saying it will have vehicle to grid (V2G) capabilities and over-the-air (OTA) software updates.
“America’s favorite vehicle for nearly half a century is going digital and fully electric. F-150 Lightning can power your home during an outage; it’s even quicker than the original F-150 Lightning performance truck; and it will constantly improve through over-the-air updates,” Farley said.
Production is expected to begin at Ford’s new Rouge Electric Vehicle Center next spring.
