Kia Canada Wants to Be the Country’s First Affordable EV Brand as Chinese EVs Approach

Kia Canada wants to own the affordable end of the electric vehicle market before Chinese automakers get a real foothold here, and it’s leaning on the 2027 Kia EV3, which starts under $40,000, to lead the way.

Kia Canada Chief Operating Officer Elias El-Achhab laid out the plan on stage at an auto industry retail forum in Vaughan, Ontario, on October 20.

As Automotive News Canada reported, he said the company is “trying to be the first affordable EV brand in the country.”

That pitch comes as Canada prepares for more Chinese-built EVs under a deal that, according to the forum coverage, allows up to 49,000 of them into the country each year at a 6.1% tariff. Rather than treating that as a threat, El-Achhab described it as more of a bonus, since Kia’s lineup was already affordable before the deal arrived.

He also argued that being a lower-cost brand makes Kia stronger, not more exposed, because its value comes from the technology and features buyers get for the price rather than just the lowest sticker.

Kia’s lineup of affordable EVs now spans three body styles. The EV3 subcompact SUV starts at $36,995, while the EV4 compact sedan starts at $38,995, both under the $40,000 mark. The EV5 compact SUV sits a step above at $43,495. Buyers wanting more performance can also look at the EV4 GT, which starts at $58,595.

According to El-Achhab, the early signs are encouraging. He said orders for the EV3 and EV5 are already backed up, and that dealers threw their support behind the plan at a recent national dealer meeting. He also noted that roughly nine in 10 EV buyers stay with electric when it comes time to replace their vehicle.

For Canadians shopping for an EV, that means more choice in the price range where it matters most. As Chinese imports begin arriving, Kia is betting its combination of pricing, features and an established dealer network will hold up against both new Chinese brands and Tesla.
