Tesla Urges Owners to Charge to 100% Ahead of Hurricane Isaias, Prepares Mobile Superchargers

Tesla is urging owners along the U.S. Gulf Coast to prepare for Hurricane Isaias by fully charging their vehicles, while the company gets ready to respond to potential disruptions across its Supercharger network.

In an update shared Thursday, Tesla recommended that owners with access to home charging charge their vehicles to 100% before the storm arrives. The extra range could prove valuable if widespread power outages make charging difficult or residents need to evacuate.

Tesla also pointed owners to the car’s screen and the Tesla app for live Supercharger availability.

The warning comes as Hurricane Isaias approaches the northern Gulf Coast. According to the National Hurricane Center’s Friday morning update, the storm had strengthened into a major hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 km/h) and was expected to make landfall Friday night or early Saturday.

Forecasters are warning of dangerous storm surge, heavy rainfall, flooding, and potentially damaging winds across portions of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

Tesla Ready to Deploy Mobile Superchargers

Beyond encouraging owners to prepare, Tesla is also taking steps to keep its charging infrastructure operational.

Before the hurricane arrives, the company’s priority is maintaining Supercharger uptime. Once the storm passes, attention will shift to restoring affected stations and deploying temporary charging infrastructure where needed.

That could include Tesla’s Megapack-powered mobile Superchargers, which can provide charging without relying directly on the local electrical grid.

Tesla has used these mobile charging setups for years, including during busy holiday travel periods. When owners first spotted one in November 2019, at the Madonna Inn Supercharger in San Luis Obispo, California, it paired a Megapack with eight Urban Supercharger stalls, and drivers reported peak rates of up to 125 kW. Tesla hasn’t said what current units deliver.

Tesla outlined a similar strategy ahead of Hurricane Milton in October 2024.
