Rogers has announced a significant upgrade to its Starlink powered satellite-to-mobile service called Rogers Satellite, extending connectivity beyond Canada’s borders and into the United States.
The expansion builds on Rogers’ existing satellite service, which first launched in Canada last year with basic text messaging capabilities, including access to emergency services.
Through a partnership with T-Mobile, Canadians travelling south of the border can now automatically connect to satellites when they enter so-called “dead zones,” where conventional cellular coverage is unavailable.
This cross-border functionality means users can send texts, access select apps, and even make voice and video calls using platforms like WhatsApp and Messenger while off-grid. Navigation apps such as Google Maps and outdoor tools like AllTrails are also supported, making the service particularly useful for road trips, hiking, and travel in remote regions.
“For Rogers customers, satellite-to-mobile roaming in the US is included with Popular or Ultimate plans with US coverage, Roam Like Home, and select Travel Passes at no extra cost,” the company said.
Despite no mention of Starlink on Rogers’ website, the technology behind the service relies on SpaceX’s low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites, which can connect directly to smartphones without the need for specialized hardware. When a device loses connection to a cellular network, it can seamlessly switch to satellite coverage, offering a lifeline in areas that were previously completely disconnected.
Rogers says the addition of T-Mobile’s satellite network brings access to roughly 1.3 million square kilometers of coverage across the United States, adding to the approximately 6 million square kilometers of coverage available in Canada below 58 degrees latitude.
The service is included at no extra cost for customers on Rogers’ Ultimate plan. Those on other plans can add it for $15 per month.
