Tesla may be laying the groundwork for a future expansion into Argentina, but not through vehicle sales alone. Argentina’s state-owned energy giant, YPF, has announced that it has signed a letter of intent with Tesla to explore potential partnership on fast-charging infrastructure, battery energy storage, and other technology initiatives.
While the agreement stops short of committing either side to specific projects or investments, it is a strong sign that Tesla has an interest in a market where electric vehicle (EV) adoption is accelerating rapidly but charging infrastructure remains limited.
The agreement was signed during a visit by YPF President Horacio MarÃn to Giga Texas earlier this month, where he met with Tesla Vice President of Energy Michael Snyder and others.

According to industry figures, more than 3,000 EVs were sold in Argentina during the first five months of 2026, representing growth of roughly 760% compared to the same time period last year. The surge was driven by policy changes introduced by President Javier Milei’s administration that temporarily removed import duties on certain electric and hybrid vehicles through the end of 2026.
Currently, YPF operates approximately 1,660 gas stations across Argentina and accounts for more than 30% of the country’s retail fuel market.
The agreement arrives as Tesla continues expanding throughout South America. Within the last two years Tesla has established a presence in Chile and Colombia. As we reported yesterday, Tesla is also preparing to launch in Uruguay.
