Tesla to set up its first manufacturing unit in India

The Chief Minister of Karnataka, a South India region known as a tech hub, announced that Tesla will set up a manufacturing unit in the area.

In his budget speech, BS Yediyurappa announced the Tesla manufacturing unit in a list of other benefits coming to the region. One of the region’s Ministers also tweeted out that a research and development unit would open. However, that tweet was quickly removed.

This announcement follows a month-long process of dialogue between Tesla and five Indian states. It was reported that Tesla also talked to the governments in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.

In 2021, Tesla has put a focus on the Asian market. A design studio is in the works in China, and now a manufacturing unit in India. Timelines and how the unit will operate was not in the announcement. It is also not clear what vehicle will be manufactured in the Karnataka unit.

Last month, Tesla registered Tesla India Motors and Energy with three directors, including Tesla’s Chief Accounting Officer. The company is incorporated in Karnataka’s capital, Bengaluru.
