The strong sales helped propel Tesla to be the third most popular auto brand, regardless or powertrain, in China’s most populous city of Shanghai.

Insurance data from the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission (CBIRC) show Tesla, with just two vehicles in their lineup, amassed 4,528 registrations in the month of November.

Not only was Tesla in the top three auto brands, the Model Y and Model 3 were the most popular New Energy Vehicles (NEV, which include plug-in hybrids) in Shanghai last month, each with 3,227 and 1,301 registrations respectively.

In terms of overall market growth for NEVs in Shanghai, 25,565 units were registered last month, representing a 6.8% increase compared to the same time period last year.

Based on a recent report, China NEV market could grow rapidly in the coming years. China EV100, a location EV industry think tank, estimates that NEV sales in 2022 will increase more than 70% to over 5 million units.
