Tesla gets record Semi truck order from Einride

Tesla has received its largest Semi truck order to date from Einride, a Swedish transport company specializing in electric and self-driving vehicles, who announced on Tuesday plans to buy 500 of the class 8 electric trucks.

The company, based in Stockholm, Sweden, says the 500 trucks will be added to its U.S. fleet over the next two years, with the trucks to be deployed across California, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, and Georgia.

Einride’s customers include Amazon, and the first Tesla Semi trucks expected to hit the road next month. Based on current pricing for the Semi, the deal is worth around US$125 million.

“This deployment is yet another proof point that we can execute at the scale our customers demand. Working closely with Tesla to bring next-generation Semis into active operations quickly and at scale is a testament to the strength of that partnership, and how quickly this technology is maturing from promise to daily operations” said Roozbeh Charli, Chief Executive Officer, Einride.

As we noted, Einride’s deal is the largest Tesla has received so far. WattEV previously held that record, with a nearly $100 million deal for 370 units announced earlier this year.

The Tesla Semi has been on a long road to production. First unveiled in 2017, the electric trucks was faced with numerous delays, pushing backs its anticipated start of production from 2019. Those delays were mainly due to battery supply shortages and the company’s focus on bringing the Model 3 and subsequently the Model Y into production.

After years of testing with PepsiCo and other partners, Tesla finally opened its high-volume Semi production factory earlier this year. At full speed, the factory will produce up to 50,000 units annually.
