Tesla’s Semi program has a newly confirmed 40 unit order, the latest sign that fleets are starting to commit as production begins.
Forum Mobility announced on LinkedIn that its customer, Big F Transport, has placed an order for 40 Tesla Semi trucks after testing the vehicle in real-world operations. The company has already been running nine electric trucks from Daimler Truck North America—specifically eCascadias—out of its Harbor facility at the Port of Long Beach, but is now expanding into Tesla’s Semi following a successful demo.
The trucks will be deployed from Forum Mobility’s Santa Fe Springs depot in Rancho Dominguez, California, which is currently under development, further building out the infrastructure needed to support electrified freight operations. (via EV-Wire)
The timing of the order comes just days after Tesla kicked off high-volume Semi production. With production now underway, fleet operators appear more willing to move forward with purchase commitments.
Part of that confidence comes down to the Semi’s specifications and expected economics. Tesla offers two variants: a Standard Range version capable of approximately 325 miles (523 km), and a Long Range version rated at around 500 miles (805 km) on a single charge. Pricing is expected to start at roughly US$260,000 for the Standard Range and about US$290,000 for the Long Range model.
Performance has also been a key selling point. Tesla says the Semi can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 20 seconds at full gross combined weight, a significant improvement over diesel trucks. It also features a tri-motor setup, delivering both efficiency and power, along with regenerative braking that reduces wear on traditional braking systems.
Charging is another differentiator. The Semi is designed to use Tesla’s Megawatt Charging System (MCS), enabling up to 1.2 megawatt (MW) charging speeds that can add about 60% charge in just 30 minutes.
Beyond the financial case, the benefits extend to other parts of the business. Drivers that were part of the demo have noted the smoother, quieter ride, echoing the sentiments of others who have had the opportunity to get behind the wheel of the Tesla Semi.
