Tesla has officially refreshed its blue paint lineup for the Model 3 and Model Y in the United States, introducing two new shades while quietly retiring one of its longest running colours.
Meanwhile north of the border, Canadian buyers are only getting one of those shades – but there’s a good reason for it.
Marine Blue in the U.S.
In the U.S., the automaker has replaced Deep Blue Metallic with a new shade called Marine Blue for the Model 3 Premium and Model Y Premium trims.
The update marks the end of Deep Blue Metallic after more than eight years in Tesla’s lineup, making it one of the company’s longest-serving paint options.
Canadian customers have already had the option to select Marine Blue for the Model Y since January due to Tesla switching its supply logistics to import the electric SUV from Giga Berlin to sidestep tariffs. That factory had already transitioned away from Deep Blue Metallic, giving Canadian customers earlier access to the colour than our neighbours down south.
Frost Blue Expands
For buyers in Canada, the only update to the paint palette is Frost Blue, and only on one trim of one vehicle.
According to Tesla’s online configurator, Frost Blue is so far only available on the Model 3 Performance in Canada, while U.S. customers can now order it on both the Model 3 Performance and Model Y Performance.
Frost Blue and Marine Blue Pricing
Tesla is also treating the two colours differently when it comes to pricing. Marine Blue carries a $1,000 option price in the U.S. on Premium trims, similar to how Tesla prices most upgraded paint options. Marine Blue is still a $1,300 option in Canada.
Frost Blue, however, comes at no additional cost on Performance variants in both Canada and the U.S., continuing Tesla’s approach of including all paint options with its higher-end trims.
What’s The Difference?
The differences between the two colours are notable. Marine Blue is a darker, richer tone designed to replace Deep Blue Metallic as Tesla’s primary blue offering for mainstream trims.
Frost Blue, meanwhile, is a lighter metallic blue with a more premium appearance that was previously exclusive to the Model S and Model X lineup. Since these two vehicles are now obviously discontinued, Tesla has decided to keep the colour going on their most popular vehicles.
Tesla has not said whether Frost Blue will expand further into the Canadian lineup, but given the company’s history of gradually aligning configurations between regions, it would not be surprising to see the colour eventually arrive on the Model Y Performance in Canada as well.
