Tesla confirms FSD V14 Lite will expand internationally, but what about Canada?

Tesla has provided an update on the future release of Full Self-Driving (FSD) for older vehicles equipped with Hardware 3 (HW3) in international markets. The company has confirmed that its upcoming “V14 Lite” software will expand beyond the United States, but not at the same pace globally, leaving questions as to when Canada will receive the update.

In a statement shared on X, Tesla outlined its plan following an initial rollout in U.S., saying, “Following future rollout of FSD V14 Lite for HW3 vehicles in the US, we plan on expanding V14 Lite to additional international markets.” The company added that the update is designed to ensure “that HW3 vehicle owners will continue to benefit from ongoing software updates.”

Notably absent from Tesla’s statement however was any direct mention of Canada. Instead of referring broadly to North America, the company specifically highlighted a U.S. first rollout followed by a phased expansion to other regions. That omission is somewhat surprising, especially since Canada is typically treated as the same market as the U.S. for FSD releases, which usually at the same time in both countries.

As a result, the wording raises the possibility that Canadian owners may not receive V14 Lite alongside our U.S. counterparts, a pattern that has played out before with some FSD updates, though less so in recent releases.

We have asked Tesla for clarification on whether they meant to say North America or if Canada will be included in the initial rollout, but have not received a response by the time of publication.

While Canadians may be left disappointed, this will be welcome news for Tesla owners outside the U.S., although the exact timeline remains unclear. Tesla said that international availability will depend on multiple factors, including “completion of technical verification, regional adaptation & relevant regulatory approvals,” noting that it “can’t provide definitive dates at the moment,” but will share updates as progress is made.

The V14 Lite release itself is significant for HW3 owners, who have been stuck on the same FSD v12.6.4 for almost a year and a half. Tesla has previously indicated that its next-generation FSD stack, developed for newer Hardware 4 (HW4/AI4) vehicles, is not fully compatible with older hardware, primarily due to memory constraints. V14 Lite appears to be the company’s solution—bringing a “streamlined”distilled” version of its latest features to millions of vehicles already on the road.

In recent months, FSD has launched in parts of Europe, as well as in Australia and New Zealand—but has been limited to newer hardware configurations. That has left many HW3 owners in those regions frustrated, particularly those who purchased FSD years ago with expectations of feature parity.

In Europe, that frustration has grown more organized. HW3 owners have begun coordinating efforts to explore potential legal action, arguing that the feature set being delivered does not align with what was originally marketed at the time of purchase, although no formal case has been filed yet.
