Tesla has issued a new recall for the Cybertruck, this time affecting a small number of units equipped with a specific wheel configuration.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall affects 173 Cybertrucks from model years 2024 to 2026 equipped with the smaller 18-inch wheels.
What’s the issue?
The problem involves the brake rotor assembly. Tesla says the stud holes in the brake rotors may develop cracks, particularly under higher stress conditions such as rough roads or aggressive cornering. If those cracks worsen over time, the wheel stud could eventually separate from the hub.
That kind of failure could reduce driver control and increase the risk of a crash. Tesla says that early warning signs may include noticeable vibrations or unusual noise coming from the vehicle cabin before any serious failure occurs.
Tesla noted that while cracking was observed in limited cases, no known crashes, injuries, or fatalities have been linked to the issue. The company also identified just three warranty claims potentially related to the defect.
Why the recall is happening now
Interestingly, Tesla had already identified potential concerns during pre-production testing in 2025. Engineers determined that the geometry of the hub and rotor mounting could contribute to stress in certain conditions.
Although improvements were planned, including redesigned components and higher-friction lug nuts, those updates were not implemented in production due to what Tesla described as a change management error.
The company later conducted additional testing and field inspections before deciding in April 2026 to issue a voluntary recall “out of an abundance of caution.”
Production of Cybertrucks with 18-inch steel wheels ended in November 2025, with Tesla attributing that due to low demand.
What’s the fix?
Tesla says it will fix the issue free of charge and replace the front and rear brake rotors, wheel hubs, and lug nuts with updated components featuring improved geometry and increased contact area, which Tesla says will reduce stress and improve durability under load.
