Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software has added another long-distance milestone to its growing list of achievements, this time completing a journey through all 48 contiguous U.S. states and Washington, DC without a single steering input.
The trip was completed by Joe Anderson in a 2026 Tesla Model Y equipped with FSD v14.3.2. According to Anderson, the drive covered 7,241 miles (11.653 km) over the course of 9 days, 21 hours, and 50 minutes between May 20 and May 29.
Anderson says he supervised the drive solo, but Tesla’s software handled every mile.
Unlike traditional Cannonball-style runs focused purely on speed, Anderson described the challenge as a “Gentleman’s Cannonball Run,” emphasizing safety over aggressive driving tactics. The airline pilot said he intentionally built strict rules into the trip, including sleeping every night, avoiding speeding violations, and never attempting to supervise the vehicle while fatigued.
“Supervising an autonomous system while exhausted is reckless,” Anderson wrote. “Safety is my first priority. I’m an airline pilot.”
According to Anderson, the journey may represent several significant milestones for Tesla’s FSD program. The trip potentially marks the first fully supervised FSD drive through all 48 contiguous states and Washington, DC, while also possibly setting the record for the fastest EV trip to accomplish the feat.
The nearly 10-day drive also highlighted how extensive Tesla’s Supercharger network has become across the United States. Anderson says the entire trip cost him US$901 for Supercharging. He estimates a comparable gas-powered SUV would have cost approximately US$1,303 in fuel for the same route.
Some things are worth taking a few days to verify properly. This is one of them…

I'm proud to announce that I have successfully driven through all 48 contiguous states plus DC in my 2026 Tesla Model Y Juniper on FSD 14.3.2. And I did it solo. Actually, let's be accurate. I… pic.twitter.com/PSNfFoEkg9
The accomplishment comes shortly after a team of three Tesla owners completed the first intervention-free coast-to-coast autonomous drive across Canada using the more recent FSD v14.3.3 in a Model 3. That trip covered over 6,050 km (3,760 miles) from Vancouver, B.C. to Halifax, Nova Scotia over the course of five days, all without touching the steering wheel, pedals, or turn signal.
