Tesla has taken its pre-assembled, or prefabricated Supercharger method to a new level, with the company announcing it has installed its first pre-assembled Megachargers for the Semi.
The installation was announced by Tesla Charging on X. The new charging units use Tesla’s latest V4 hardware and arrive on-site largely assembled, reducing the construction and installation work required. Each unit combines one V4 power cabinet with two charging posts, with each post capable of delivering up to 1.2 megawatts.

Tesla developed two versions of the pre-assembled unit to accommodate different site layouts. According to Tesla’s charging lead Max de Zegher, there are long and short variants designed to minimize conductor length and the amount of trenching required between the chargers and a site’s switchgear or transformer. Reducing underground electrical work could lower costs and help Tesla bring new Megacharger locations online faster.
De Zegher also highlighted how quickly the modular design progressed from an initial concept to physical hardware being installed.
“Only at Tesla does a sketch become units craned onto site in under 3 months,” he said.
We first learned about Tesla using pre-assembled Megachargers in June, when plans for a station in Florida revealed the installation method. Tesla did not reveal where the first units were installed, although based on the photos it doesn’t appear to be in Florida. Instead, they were likely installed in California, where the only two existing public Megachargers are located.
The pre-assembled design will play an important role as the company expands charging infrastructure for fleet operators across North America and Europe. Electric Class 8 trucks require considerably more power than passenger vehicles to charge their much larger battery packs without creating lengthy stops, as downtime costs operators money.
The 1.2 MW output is intended to add significant range during scheduled driver breaks, with Tesla saying the Semi can recover up to 60% of its battery in 30 minutes.
Tesla is also planning a major Megacharger rollout in Europe. The company revealed yesterday its plans for more than 100 Megacharging stalls in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium and other markets.
