Tesla brings powered liftgate retrofit for older Model 3s to North America

Tesla has finally launched the powered liftgate retrofit for older Model 3s in North America. The new retrofit comes more than a year and a half after it was first launched in China, and just a few weeks after we asked Tesla if it would ever be coming to Canada and the US.

Owners of older Model 3s in China were the first to get the powered liftgate retrofit back in February 2022, with the upgrade costing just ¥3,980 (C$750/US$555). This was a very reasonable price compared to third party solutions, made especially good because you were receiving genuine Tesla parts, a professional installation, and a three-year warranty.

Fast forward to just last month and Tesla lowered the price of the retrofit in China to ¥2,980 (C$560 CAD/US$415), while there was still no sign of it coming to North America. That has now changed, but unfortunately the cost is much higher in Canada and the US.

According to the Tesla Shop, the retrofit will set you back $1,085 if you live in Canada or $800 if you live in the US, essentially double what it costs in China. Unfortunately the product listing doesn’t state if the retrofit also comes with a three year warranty like it does in China, but we assume it does.

The Model 3 Powered Liftgate Retrofit can only be purchased in the mobile app. To find it, tap on ‘Upgrades’ on the main screen, then ‘Accessories,’ and then ‘Interior.’
