Tesla is preparing several upgrades for its mobile app, with new code pointing to two particularly notable additions – Passkey authentication and Cybertruck Powershare with Powerwall.
The Powershare changes are especially interesting, coming just days after days after we reported about the long-awaited feature still absent from Cybertruck after several missed timelines.
The changes were uncovered in a decompile of Tesla app version 4.60.0, by Tesla App Updates on X, and while features found in app code aren’t guaranteed to launch, they provide a glimpse at what Tesla is currently developing.
Tesla prepares Passkey support
One of the biggest additions is native Passkey authentication, giving Tesla owners an alternative to passwords and traditional two-factor authentication (2FA).
According to strings found in the app, owners will be able to create, manage, and revoke Passkeys tied to their Tesla account. Authentication would instead rely on secure hardware and biometrics on a user’s smartphone, such as Face ID, Touch ID, or fingerprint authentication. The app also checks whether a device is eligible for Passkeys and whether the user already has one enrolled.
Older devices without the necessary hardware would continue using Tesla’s existing password and 2FA system.
Powershare and Powerwall get closer
But more interesting for Cybertruck owners is code about Powershare and Powerwall. As we reported earlier this week, Tesla commented on bringing Powershare functionality to Cybertrucks connected to homes with Powerwall, something that has been missing since the truck launched.
While the comments didn’t provide a new timeline, it appears the feature’s launch could be just around the corner, as the code hints at how te two systems are designed to operate together during an outage. A connected Cybertruck can remain in standby until the Gateway detects a grid outage, allowing the vehicle and Powerwall to coordinate supplying energy to the home.
Tesla is also building in safeguards. If an owner attempts to stop Powershare when the Powerwall doesn’t have enough stored energy to support the home’s load, the app can warn that the house may lose power.
Combined with Tesla’s Powershare update earlier this week, the new code is a strong indication that long-awaited Cybertruck and Powerwall integration is getting closer to release.
