Rivian Confirms R2 Will Support Vehicle to Home: But Not At Launch

A Rivian executive has revealed plans to enable vehicle-to-home (V2H) support on the R2. However, the feature will only arrive after a charger redesign.

During an AMA (ask me anything) session on Reddit, Rivian software head Wassym Bensaid has stated that R2 owners could expect V2H capabilities.

However, the feature is not coming any time soon. According to Bensaid, the affordable electric crossover’s powertrain has been developed to function as a large household backup battery. However, for owners to use the capability, Rivian would have to provide a suitable bi-directional charger.

Bensaid assured Rivian fans that the company is working on a new charger and metering device. However, he did not reveal a definitive timeline.

While V2H is not available out of the gate, the electric car can power electrical appliances, such as work tools, via the Rivian Field Outlet adapter. The tool, which has two NEMA 5-20 outlets, was developed to plug into the R2’s NACS port. However, Rivian has not released details about the adapter’s availability and pricing.

The R2 is expected to start reaching buyers in June 2026, after Rivian launched a configurator for US-based buyers in May 2026. The SUV is not yet available for order in Canada, but interested buyers can make a reservation with a refundable C$150 fee. First deliveries are expected north of the border some time in 2027.
