Lucid’s upcoming midsize Cosmos SUV may have just made its first appearance on public roads, and as luck would have it, the electric SUV was spotted next to the very vehicle it was be competing against, the Tesla Model Y.
A photo shared this week by X user John show a camouflaged Lucid prototype driving near the company’s AMP-1 manufacturing facility in Casa Grande, Arizona. While Lucid has not confirmed the identity of the vehicle, there are clues pointing to it being the automaker’s midsize platform Cosmos, which has not previously been spotted testing publicly on roads.

One of the clearest clues is visible through the windshield, where a large dashboard-mounted screen can be seen extending across much of the cabin. Teaser images from Lucid’s Investor Day show the same screen layout.
How It Compares to the Tesla Model Y
The sighting is generating attention not just because it may be the first public road appearance of Lucid’s upcoming midsize SUV, but also because it provides a great look at how the vehicle physically compares to the Tesla Model Y.
Based on the photos, it appears as though the prototype is generally the same size as the Model Y, but could feature a significantly larger frunk, which would be in line with the massive frunk Lucid offers on the Gravity SUV.
The vehicle also appears to have a noticeably more aggressive stance than the rounded shape of the Model Y, with a lower, wider appearance that leans closer to Lucid’s existing design language. It also appears to have a traditional metal roof instead of a full glass roof, a move that could reduce weight and manufacturing costs and help Lucid achieve a lower price point.
Lucid’s Push Into the Mainstream EV Market
Just two months ago, Lucid officially revealed new details about its upcoming midsize platform during Investor Day 2026, including the names of its first two vehicles: the Lucid Cosmos and Lucid Earth.
According to Lucid, the Cosmos will be an SUV “designed for customers seeking exceptional efficiency, space, and performance,” while the Earth will target buyers looking for something with a more adventurous character. Both models are expected to launch with starting prices below US$50,000, placing them directly into the same market segment currently dominated by the Tesla Model Y.
Lucid has already previewed some aspects of the midsize platform’s design philosophy. During Investor Day, the company said the vehicles would maintain Lucid’s focus on efficiency and premium technology while dramatically lowering production costs through simplified engineering and manufacturing processes.
That strategy is critical for Lucid’s future. While the Lucid Air sedan and Gravity SUV have established the brand as a serious luxury EV competitor, both vehicles remain well above mainstream price points. The midsize platform is intended to move Lucid into higher-volume segments where it can compete more directly with Tesla, Hyundai, Kia, Ford, and other automakers offering mass-market electric SUVs.
Lucid says its new Atlas drive unit and smaller battery requirements will help keep costs down without sacrificing range or performance.
Reveal Expected Later This Year
If this prototype is indeed the Lucid Cosmos, it marks an important milestone for the automaker. Public road testing typically signals a vehicle program is progressing into more advanced development stages.
Lucid has said it hopes to fully unveil the Cosmos this summer, with production starting later this year and the first deliveries taking place in 2027.
