Hyundai is recalling 5,360 Ioniq 9 electric SUVs in the United States after discovering the electric SUV’s power-operated second-row seats may keep moving after they come into contact with a person or object.
The issue affects certain 2026 Ioniq 9s in Limited, Calligraphy and Calligraphy Design trims. When someone activates a powered function, including the automatic fold-and-stow feature, the seat may fail to detect an obstruction. That creates a risk of someone being trapped or injured, especially a child.
Hyundai told the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) it has received five complaints from U.S. owners, two of which alleged minor injuries. No recall has been issued by Transport Canada at the time of publication.
Hyundai began investigating the issue in March, and by August determined that certain second-row seats applied more force than the limits that had been set. The third-row systems tested below those limits.
For now, owners should check that nobody is sitting in or near the second-row seats before using the power-folding controls. Hyundai is particularly urging owners to keep children clear of the area while the seats move.
The fix is a change to the seat controller software. Dealers will inspect and update affected vehicles free of charge, while eligible owners who have opted in to Bluelink updates may receive the fix over the air (OTA).
