Geely has started rolling out its new Smart Charging C12 stations in China, bringing a peak charging output of 2.25 MW (2,250 kW) per connector to several major cities.
According to Chinese media reports, the new chargers are already installed in Hangzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo, Jiaxing and Xi’an. Geely unveiled the fifth-generation charging system in Ningbo on September 23.
While the 2,250 kW is impressive, it is the charger’s peak output rather than what current vehicles can accept. CarNewsChina reports that the compatible Zeekr 001 and Lynk & Co 10 currently top out at around 1,100 kW.
Still, paired with Geely’s new 12C Shendun Golden Battery, the charging times are extremely quick. In Geely’s tests, the two models charged from 10 to 70 per cent in 4 minutes and 30 seconds, and from 10 to 97 per cent in just 8 minutes and 40 seconds.
Geely says its Xingrui PowerMind AI system predicts battery temperature up to 30 seconds in advance and adjusts charging power, while an end-to-end liquid cooling system helps manage temperatures throughout the charging process.
The rollout adds another player to China’s rapidly growing megawatt charging race. BYD’s megawatt Flash Charging system peaks at 1,500 kW per connector, with the automaker having already deployed more than 10,000 Flash Charging stations across China, with a goal to reach 20,000 by year-end.
Geely hasn’t announced any Canadian charging plans for the technology, though it has been hiring in Toronto as it prepares for a Canadian launch. The company has also recently expanded its charging interests through a battery-swapping deal with NIO Power.
